Spatial Audio: What is it and how does it work?

Our Worlds are designed to feel like in-person events. And we know, one vital part of events is interacting with other people. That is why we designed the spatial audio feature.

Spatial audio refers to the ability to hear other users based on their proximity to you in the Room.

Similar to an in-person event, the closer you get to a user’s avatar the better you can hear them. Conversely, the farther away you are, the harder it is to hear them.

Adjust how you hear or communicate with someone by moving your bubble. To hear more from a user, move your bubble closer to theirs and simply move away to hear less.

Spatial audio may not be enabled in every Room in a World.

When spatial audio is enabled, the ear icon will appear green.

This means that users will have to move close to other users in order to hear and talk to them.

When spatial audio is disabled, the ear icon will appear white with a slash through it.

This means that everyone in the Room can hear everyone else.

An admin will be able to turn spatial audio on and off, in addition to the range of a user's audio.

If an admin changes the spatial audio settings in the room, users will receive a notification informing them of the changes made to spatial audio.

There is a presentation audio feature called Speaker Mode. When someone is in Speaker Mode, their audio will be heard throughout the room regardless of spatial audio settings. However, they will not be able to hear other users' audio if spatial audio is enabled.

When a user is in Speaker Mode, their avatar will become larger avatar than other users.

Guests do not have the ability to turn on Speaker Mode for themselves, but an Admin can put a user in and out of Speaker Mode.
